Plant Life and Your Conservatory

11 April 2011

Decorating your conservatory is always the fun part. Once you have constructed your DIY conservatory, adding the final décor can truly make your conservatory part of your home. In addition to curtains, blinds, furniture and lighting, adding a few plants can really bring your conservatory to life. Due to conservatories now having good quality door and window glazing, good amounts of natural light being let in, and the ability to be able to control the temperature using the central heating, you can also recreate a garden feel inside your conservatory once the colder winter months descend upon us. Plants that would have otherwise perished outside can be kept looking great and allows us to continue enjoying our “garden” inside. A conservatory can also be used to nurture young vegetables using the heat and sunlight available during the spring months.

Due to the light intensity of the conservatory, most house plants will not be a good choice if you want them to survive, but you can opt for more sub-tropical flowering plants such as Jasmine, Hibiscus and Bougainvillaea. When choosing your plants though, be aware of where flowers and leaves are likely to drop off, ensuring that they do not damage or stain any carpets, furniture or other décor that might be in their pathway.

Depending on which way your conservatory faces will also determine what sort of plants will do better, For example, east facing conservatories are better for rhododendrons, and North is better for orchids.
