Nurturing Your DIY Conservatory Plants

20 June 2011

With the Chelsea Flower show literally in full bloom this week, the obvious topic of discussion is all about the plants, shrubs and flowers all of which are used to make up a beautiful garden. To make sure that your DIY conservatory plants and flowers are nurtured in the best way possible here are a few tips to help you get the best out of them during the summer months:

  • With an increase of sunlight hours, plants will probably need to be watered every couple of days and seedlings will need daily watering. Make sure you do not over water them though as this can kill off the plants. Ideally plants will also benefit from a daily misting of luke-warm water or rainwater especially if conditions are very humid.
  • If you have any tropical plants you will need to make sure that your conservatory has a temperature of over 12°C.
  • For sensitive plants like Fuchsias, temperatures should not go below 5°C as the cold can kill them.
  • After pruning in springtime, Fuchsias will also benefit from being placed in a sunny spot to enable re-growth.
  • Conservatory plants can be prone to getting very dusty which can cause health problems to the plant, therefore make sure that you clean leaves with a soft damp cloth and if leaves are spikey use a soft brush instead.
  • In order to prevent disease and reduce the humidity for certain plants, if it is a hot day, try to open as many doors and windows of your conservatory as possible.
  • If plants look like they are root-bound ie growing too large for their pot, re-pot them in a larger pot.
  • Make sure you remember to move any plants outside to the garden if they are better suited to lower temperatures than what your conservatory can maintain during the summer months.
