Keeping Your Conservatory Warm

16 September 2013

A conservatory is not only a stylish addition to the home, it is also an extra room to use for various practical and leisure purposes. So it is important to many homeowners that they can keep their conservatory warm and functional all year round.

There are several ways to increase the warmth of a conservatory during the colder months. Some are simple measures such as keeping the blinds or curtains open on a sunny day and closing them in the evening. This will trap heat harnessed during the day and it will dissipate less quickly. Specialist blinds with higher reflective properties are ideal for this.

It’s not always possible to rely on a sunny day, however, and additional measures may be necessary. Installing a radiator is an obvious way to pump heat into a conservatory. These can often be installed relatively cheaply and easily and can be thermostatically controlled. The wide range of designs includes discreet low-level radiators, but they will still take up space on the wall, potentially a problem in conservatories where wall space is limited.

Another option is to install underfloor heating systems. These can be a good and efficient source of heat and aesthetically are often preferred to radiators. However, they can also be expensive and difficult to install and often have a slow response time. There are two basic options – dry, or electric, heating, and wet heating, which works off the main plumbing system.

Keeping a conservatory warm doesn’t have to involve pumping heat into them. There is enormous scope for retaining heat simply by using solar control glass units in the roof. Using the right combination of replacement glass units means that conservatories can be kept cool in summer and warm in winter.

At Centurion DIY Conservatories we can provide Pilkington solar control glass units, designed for conservatories to keep conservatories cooler in summer while allowing optimum light transmission and to also keep conservatories warm. This high performance glass offers superb thermal insulation and has a neutral appearance to also allow light transmission. We can advise you on the best combination of glass units, allowing effective use of your conservatory all year round.
