Aspect Of Your Conservatory - South Facing

25 April 2011

Depending on the layout of your home and where it is positioned, you may be lucky enough to have the choice of the aspect of your Do-It-Yourself conservatory, in other words, which way your conservatory faces. The next few articles will talk about the pros and cons of having your conservatory facing North, South, East or West.

South facing conservatories seem to be a popular choice as they are much brighter than north facing especially in the spring and summer months. Watching the sun go down can also be enjoyed on a beautiful summer’s evening. South facing conservatories are also great for growing exotic plants, creating some natural colour in your home.

Due to the long hours of sunlight in the summer, one drawback of a south facing conservatory is that it will heat up and retain heat very quickly and could become very hot and therefore uncomfortable. To overcome this, good ventilation and even air conditioning would be required. Ventilation can be generated through having roof vents and low level opening windows. Having double doors, French windows or large sliding/concertina doors will also allow a much better breeze to be created through out the conservatory. Finally good quality solar reflecting roof blinds can also help keep the heat out.
